Abstract

Even if the ferroelectricity and the magnetic order usually appear separately, there are rarecompounds, known as multiferroïcs, where the spin and the charge ordering coexist, andsometimes induce each other. The mechanism of their coexistence is one of major questions intoday’s materials science. In the case of large magnetoelectric coupling, important applications ofthese materials can be found in data storage domain, as they offer the possibility to controlferroelectric properties by magnetic fields and magnetism by electric fields. Moreover, they areimportant for the development of sustainable energy sources, like solar cells, as they offer thepossibility of efficient ferroelectric polarization-driven carrier separation. The object of the proposed work is to reach a better understanding of the conditions which arenecessary to obtain a simultaneous appearance of the magnetic and the charge ordering. Thesystems we will be interested in are the organic charge-transfer salts, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2X, andmetal-organic perovskite-like framework [(CH)3NH2]Fe(HCOO)3. We will study their detailedstructure and the elemental excitations, like dd-, charge transfer, or collective magnetic andphonon excitations. Two experimental techniques will mainly be used: diffraction (X-ray orneutron) and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS). The interpretation of the experimentaldata will be supported by ab-initio state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations andsimulations of the experimental spectra.

Subject description :

Moreover, they offer thepossibility of efficient ferroelectric polarization-driven carrier separation, important for solar energy conversion.

Bi-dimensional charge-transfer salts kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2X are model systems showing variousstates, depending on the counter-anion (X), and external parameters (pressure, temperature). Their structure is composed of layers of triangular constellation of dimers of BEDT-TTF (bis-(ethylene-thio)-tetra-thia-fulvalene) molecules, separated by anion layers parallel to the (b,c) plane. An extremely subtle competition between the spin frustration and the coulomb interactionresults in their different ground states. In particular, some of them are multiferroïc, others arequantum spin-liquids, showing no spin ordering despite a strong antiferromagnetic interaction.At the same time, most of them show some type of charge ordering.

This project focuses on multimodal control of prostheses using a different range of noninvasive physiological signals including EEG, EMG and accelometer. The multimodal control will be adapted based on the abilities and needs of patients. Moreover, automatic intelligent algorithms will be developed in to make the control intuitive, natural and adaptive. Such that the model can learn new movements/skills over time. In stroke and spinal cord injury patients, in addition to artificial limb, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) can be potentially used to restore impaired limb motor functions. FES is a technique which stimulates intact peripheral nerves to generate muscle contractions. This is a collaborative project between department of automatic control and systems engineering and medical colleagues from Royal Hallamshire hospital and Northern General hospitals as well as colleagues in other UK universities.The prospective student will gain experience across different disciplines.The project involves designing and conducting experimental research as well as data analysis and algorithm development.

BAP-2020-257) At KU Leuven, the departments of Materials Engineering and Computer Science have established a new strategic research initiative on Computational Materials Science, led by Prof. Martin Diehl. The aim is to develop advanced computational tools and new materials, giving an extra dimension to the ongoing research in the two departments. The Department of Materials Engineering (MTM) performs research on material properties and behaviour, materials design and materials production and recycling. At the Department of Computer Science, the research unit NUMA performs research on numerical methods, algorithms and software for simulation and data analysis, with applications in many fields in science and engineering. The research in the unit NUMA on materials engineering focusses on multi-scale simulation, high performance computing and model order reduction. The departments have an extensive national and international network, both in the academic and industrial world. URLs: mtm.kuleuven.be/English. ProjectDislocations and impurity atoms influence each other mutually: Impurity atoms usually pin dislocations and the distorted lattice around dislocations can lead to preferential diffusion of impurities to the vicinity of the line defect. During deformation, the unpinning of dislocations leads to serrated flow that can be also observed in macroscopic stress–strain curves. Materials which show this behavior are Tungsten–Rhenium (bcc crystal structure) and Nickel-based superalloys (fcc crystal structure).The aim of this Ph.D. project is the development and implementation of a continuum-scale constitutive model for dislocation–solute interactions. To this end, the temperature-dependent interaction of impurity atoms and dislocations will be first studied by means of computer simulations at the scale of individual defects.

Based on the insights from these investigations, a continuum-scale crystal plasticity model will be developed and implemented. Finally, the results are compared to experimental data from the literature or measurements of a collaboration partner.We are looking for a Ph.D. candidate who is interested in metal physics, model development, and mathematical engineering. The proposed tasks include:·Simulation studies of dislocation–solute interactions at atomic scales·Formulation of a continuum crystal plasticity model·Implementation of the novel model into a simulation framework Offer ·We offer a full time position as a PhD researcher. Funding is secured for four years. The initial offer will be a one-year appointment, of which the renewal will only depend on the progress in the PhD research. ·You will receive a monthly tax-free grant.
