10 Memorable Moments of TED GLOBAL 2013

It is very special for me to attend TED GLOBAL 2013 on behalf of TEDxSuzhou. Not because this is my first TED Conference, not because this is my first travel abroad, not because I have met many great people in person. It is because the itinerary is special. The day I arrive Edinburgh is my father’s birthday and the day I depart Edinburgh is my own birthday. Same to my father, born and bred Suzhou, got married and became father, I never leave this city. But with the Internet, I didn’t feel the distance between those attendees all around the world during the conference. As a TEDx organizer, I’d like to share 10 memorable moments.

Warmly Greeting From Information Desk

June 9th, Alex, my roommate from Kenya, and me went to EICC for registration. After confirmed, we went to the information desk for name badge and gifts bag. Suddenly when the Conference staff called my name “Jade”, I was surprised and felt warm. The name badge is a great bridge between the attendees. It includes my name, a head photo, personal background, and 3 topics which I’m interested. The gift bag includes an umbrella, a rainproof, a scarf and maps, etc. You can feel the professional arrangement from every detail. But the deepest impression for me are those warmly greeting during the whole conference.

Twenty-somethings White T-shirts

During the 8th session, special audiences with white T-shirts were sitting in the first few rows. When host June introduced they were members of TED's volunteer translation team, it achieved enthusiastic applause. During the whole conference, many volunteers, staffs, fellows have been recognized by TED host on the stage. But my deepest impression is those white T-shirts and a group of more than 9,000 volunteer translators in 101 languages. Because of their efforts, TED Talks have been spreading globally.

Spring Water Handed By Chris Anderson

It is hard not to feel nervous in front of thousands audiences. During this conference, Chris Anderson has handed spring water to a speaker who was very nervous. After a short break, she continued to perform a great talk. Of course, you will not find it in TED Talks. Started by invitation letter, submitting speech materials, rehearsal, presenting, editing and finally post on TED.com, there is a huge amount of contribution from a group of people behind a TED Talk.

Two Movable Sculptures

It took me a long time to find out those two sculptures which were real human. Besides two sculptures, there were lots of amazing masterpieces in the Museum of Scotland. From the Castle to Museum of Scotland, from Edinburgh International Conference Center to Holyrood Park, from Royal Lyceum Theatre to Assembly Rooms, we have enjoyed the boundless scenery around the Castle during the Conference. But the most surprising thing for me is those sculptures.

The Gentleman Who Enjoy Wild Grass

I thought it would be a boring morning on June 10th. Imaging a Gentleman, a chief and a group of people were searching for wild grass to eat. The Gentleman has an unusual experience. Few years ago, he quit his job as a marketing consultant and starting to research on plants. The chief had turned wild grass into delicious dishes. Though, as a Chinese, I didn’t familiar with the taste, it suddenly changed my hierarchy of needs on food, from sufficient and safety food to respect to the nature. Actually during the whole conference, a variety of foods has been provided.

The Performer & Water Breaker

Jumping up and down on the piano, singing loudly with a water breaker, I was deeply impressed by this performer. The Conference has totally 12 sessions and every session includes musical performance. Combining with new technology and stage-lighting effect, it is exactly the “E” from TED. Performers come from difference areas with difference styles, but I feel closer tie with this performer.

7. Tom的合影 Photo with Tom

Do you still remember ”marshmallow challenge” and the TED Talk, Build a tower, build a team? This is the TED Talk I have watched the most times and also have completed “marshmallow challenge” with students lots of times. It was exciting to have a photo with the speaker, Tom Wujec. During the 6 days of the Conference, you could suddenly meet a famous speaker and talk with them.

Fortune Cookie & Magic Hands

Opening the fortune cookie with my magic hands, this is a short video I have made using iStopMotion Apps in TED-ED workshop. Around the main stage, there were social space and a variety of workshops. I attended all workshop related to education. Among them, TED-ED is my favorite project. Starting from 2012, TED-ED brought some new projects and ideas this time. Using iStopMotion to express ideas, another thing I will introduce to students.

A Table For Ordering Dishes

A digital ordering system was demonstrated by a restaurant. One of the founders is from IT industry and the system has been working for 5 years, updating several times. 3D printing, transparent Screen, electrocar, new methods of interaction, there were lots of demonstration of new technology around the main stage. Though it was a pity I didn’t experience the electrocar, I was deeply impressed by his digital ordering stories after nearly 1 hour talk.

Bruno’s Non-English Opening

During the last session, the host Bruno started with a non-English opening which I couldn’t understand a word. Maybe it was a response to Rivers’ joke that he didn’t speak English. As a TEDx organizer, language is a big issue. Though the official language is English, I can experience a strong feeling of diversity from speakers, even controversy. And next year, TED Global 2014 will be held in Rio, Brazil. It also means TED is becoming more and more globalization.

There is a great deal of wonderful moments you will learn from the later TED Talks. And one more thing, from June 7th to June 9th, it was a crucial moments for Chinese students, Chinese College Entrance Examination. I have never taken this examination, and as the generation after 80s, to attend TED Global2013 during these days means a lot to me. It means there is a lot of doors for students in a global classroom. In 10 years later, when my son will graduate from high-school, the Chinese College Entrance Examination may become less important to attend university. And TED has become the biggest university in the world.
