1、12 Research Positions available within the Marie-Curie ITN MINOA on mixed-integer non-linear optimization


The MINOA (Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Optimization: Algorithms and Applications) consortium is seeking highly motivated and qualified Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) that are looking for obtaining a PhD degree in applied mathematics, operations research, and computer science.

Once recruited, you will study relevant applications in areas such as energy, logistics, engineering, analytics, and natural sciences. In total, 12 positions are available within the network. You will be trained through an innovative training programe based on individual research projects motivated by these applications. As special challenges, you will work on dynamic aspects and optimization in real time, optimization under uncertainty, multilevel optimization or on non-commutativity in quantum computing. You will devise new effective algorithms and computer implementations and will validate your methods for the applications with respect to metrics that you will define. You will derive recommendations, both for optimised MINO applications and for the effectiveness of the novel methodologies.

2、Ph.D. position in Operations Research


DESCRIPTION

The Make our Planet Great Again (MOPGA) initiative is one of the components of France's strategy in the fight against global warming. As part of this initiative, the French government will co-fund the work of 20 Ph.D. candidates conducting research on areas related to climate change and energy transition. One of the pre-selected topics deals with the application of operations research tools to the design and operation of electric bus lines. CONTEXT

The thesis will be co-advised by Michel Gendreau (Polytechnique Montréal – CIRRELT), Christelle Guéret (Université d'Angers – LARIS), and Jorge E. Mendoza (Polytech Tours – LIFAT). The selected student will prepare his or her dissertation under a joint degree agreement and spend at least 24 months in Montreal and 24 months in Angers.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal applicant possesses strong computer programming skills (preferably in Java) and software architecture; has advance knowledge of operations research models and methods; and is able to communicate comfortably in English. Such applicants must hold a Master degree in operations research, management science, industrial engineering, or applied mathematics. Knowledge of French is only necessary for making life more pleasant in France and Quebec but not professionally required. Citizens or permanent residents of France are not eligible.

2】 The Graduate-Level Research in Industrial Projects (G-RIPS) Program provides an opportunity for high-achieving graduate-level students to work in teams on a real-world research project proposed by a sponsor from industry or the public sector. Each G-RIPS team is comprised of four international students (two from the US and two from European universities), an academic mentor, and an industrial sponsor. The research problem is always a real problem of serious interest to the sponsor and that offers a stimulating challenge to students.


Most of these projects involve both analytic and computational work. The students, with direction from their academic mentor and industrial sponsor, will learn about the problem, master the latest analytical and computational approaches and techniques to solve it. At the end of the program, the teams will present the results of their work and prepare a final report. English is the only language required for participation.


4、PhD position in Algorithms at Bonn University (Matthias Mnich)


A PhD position is available in the research group of Dr. Matthias Mnich (tcs.cs.uni-bonn.de/doku ) at Bonn University in Germany.


The position is for 3 years with the possibility of extension. The starting date is negotiable; we are interested in filling the position as soon as possible. The position is full-time and paid according to salary grade TV-L E 13 (the standard rate for junior scientific staff at German universities; salary depends on experience and social factors).


The successful candidate will perform research as part of the DFG funded project "Multivariate Algorithms in Scheduling". Candidates must hold (or be close to completion) of a master's degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics or a related area. They should have a very good knowledge about algorithms and complexity. Further background in mathematical areas, especially discrete mathematics and/or combinatorial optimization, is considered advantageous. An interest and/or research experience in scheduling algorithms, parameterized complexity or approximation algorithms can be supportive. Pro­gram­ming skills are a plus. Good communication skills and solid English writing skills are mandatory, while knowledge of German is not required but basic skills are considered beneficial.


The position is based at the Department of Theoretical Computer Science (tcs.cs.uni-bonn.de/doku) at Bonn University. The department currently accommodates 4 professors, 3 postdocs and 8 PhD students.
