提到了7个challenges，如下图

首先有三种variation：viewpoint, scale和intra-class,用上面的图来看很好理解，一个是方向的变化，一个是比例变化，还有一个是形状的变化。

variation

n. 变化
英英： a change or slight difference in condition.

来看看解释的句子：

1. Viewpoint variation

解释： A single instance of an object can be oriented in many ways with respect to the camera.

翻译：一个对象的单个实例可以以多种方式对摄像机进行定向

oriented  
adj. 导向的；定向的；以…为方向的
v. 调整；使朝向

with respect to 
关于；至于

⚠️oriented还有重视，感兴趣的意思，即attention to one particular thing

She’s very career orientated. 她非常有事业心。

2. Scale variation

解释： Visual classes often exhibit variation in their size (size in the real world, not only in terms of their extent in the image).

翻译：视觉的类别通常表现其大小的变化（现实世界中的大小，不仅仅是它们在图像中的范围）

⚠️extent 有两种意思

1⃣️ the area covered by something，指长度或面积

the extent of global warming

2⃣️ the degree to which something is or is believed to be the case，指程度

to a lesser/greater extent (= less or more) 在较轻/更大程度上

3. Intra-class variation

解释：The classes of interest can often be relatively broad, such as chair. There are many different types of these objects, each with their own appearance.

翻译：同类通常可以相对广泛,比如椅子。这些对象有许多不同的类型，每个都有自己的外观。

interest  
n. 兴趣，爱好；利息；利益；趣味；同行
 vt. 使……感兴趣；引起……的关心；使……参与

⚠️interest 是一个大家都很熟悉的词，但除了兴趣爱好，它还有一个意思就是同类同组，英文解释就是a group or organisation having a common concern, especially in politics or business，意思是有共同关注点的团体或组织，所以the classes of interest可以翻译成同类。

4. deformation也是变形，但是和variant不同，一般是体态的变化。

解释：Many objects of interest are not rigid bodies and can be deformed in extreme ways.

翻译：许多同类的物体不是僵硬的，它们可以以极端的方式变形。

5. occlusion，就是被挡住了，看不见整体

解释：The objects of interest can be occluded. Sometimes only a small portion of an object (as little as few pixels) could be visible.

翻译：物体可以被遮挡。有时一个物体只有一小部分(只有几个像素)是可见的。

⚠️其实【挡】这个词在英语里还有很多词可以表示，因为occlude大多数情况还是在治疗牙齿的时候用，比如牙齿打封闭或者表示咬合力。

• 表遮蔽的挡：cover / blind

Never be blinded by private interests 绝不能让私利挡住了眼睛

A cloud covered the moon 一片云彩挡住了月亮

• 表拦住或抵挡：keep off/block/resist/against

这里有两种意思，一个是实际的挡，比如挡风挡雨，就用block，keep off；还有就是精神上的挡，比如抵挡真理，这里有反抗，坚持的意思，就可以用against之类的。

我们凡事不能敌挡真理，只能扶助真理

6.Illumination conditions，结合上面的图看就很明白了，就是光照情况

解释：The effects of illumination are drastic on the pixel level.

翻译： 光照对像素级的影响是剧烈的

⚠️ illumination除了表示光照，还有启发的意思，光照到心里不就是启发么。

⚠️ drastic是一个很常用的形容词，和radical，extreme相近，雅思小作文里经常用到。

7. background clutter 杂乱的背景

解释：The objects of interest may blendinto their environment, making them hard to identify.

翻译：同类物体可能会融入他们的环境，使他们难以识别

• clutter做动词就是堆，填满，你想屋里东西都是推起来的能不乱么。英译就是cover or fill(something) with an untidy collection of things。

Piles of books and papers cluttered his desk.

他的书桌堆满了书和文件。

• clutter作名词就是乱，an untidy state。

Could you get rid of some of that clutter in your bedroom?

你能把你卧室那些杂物清理掉一些吗？

n. 混合；掺合物

做饭的时候经常用到blend，或者是在合作的时候，不同的人/性格融合在一起。

Leave the sauce to allow the flavours to blend together.

让酱汁放一放，使各种味道调和起来。

把糖、鸡蛋和面粉掺在一起。
